The primary goal of workplace safety is to protect employees and customers’ employees from harm and reduce the risk of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. Safety measures can help reduce costs and improve productivity. Workplace safety is an ongoing process. Therefore, regularly reviewing and updating safety policies and procedures to adapt to changing circumstances or new hazards is necessary.
Our approach is based on the ‘Bradley Safety Model’ used by safety managers when committing to zero accidents in the workplace. It provides a way to evaluate our safety culture and highlights potential ways to improve in these four areas: leadership, equipment, processes and people.
Since 2010, we are an active campaign partner of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). Toyota has also been a member of the campaign partner steering group since 2014. As such, we exchange best practices with other EU-OSHA partners and have a thorough understanding of what employee and customer safety entails and how or when accidents occur.
A Health, Safety & Wellbeing e-learning course is mandatory for all new employees, followed by local training. We ensure our office workers have ergonomic workstations, good office equipment, and that they take necessary breaks and claim their right to disconnect.
Managers are key persons in a company when it comes to designing and improving the working conditions and they act as role models. They plan, lead, coordinate and control the work and related activities. All these aspects contribute to determining the level of health and safety at work. Our leaders show the way, but we also benchmark with others to ensure we are always on top of new legislation and trends.
All factory workers start with safety training. Learning Dojos provide employees with a path to improve their skills and mindsets in the areas of Lean, Agile, DevOps, and Product Development.
Through our After Sales Evaluation & Certification programme (ASEC), regular evaluations are conducted to make sure that teams have safe equipment, the required knowledge and skills to handle hazardous products and waste and that team members take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of themselves and those in the proximity.
The ISO 45001 certification is mandatory for our factories and recommended for all other entities. Our Marketing & Sales Companies have committed to getting certified latest by 2030 latest.

Operator training programme
We encourage safe operator behaviour by providing operator training. Out of all forklift injuries every year, roughly 25% can be attributed to the lack of operator training. When bringing in new people, reassigning responsibilities, or adjusting processes to keep up with demand, training is vital to optimise operational safety and efficiency. Our basic operator training is a procedure to ensure compliance with laws requiring drivers to be appropriately qualified.
