A new chapter in warehouse safety: Operator Detection Assist (ODA) launched by Toyota Material Handling Europe

To support businesses in creating safer, more efficient workflows, Toyota Material Handling Europe introduces a new operator detection assist system. ODA is an intelligent, optional safety feature designed specifically for Toyota’s powered pallet and stacker trucks. By combining advanced sensor technology with real time machine response, the system helps protect operators’ feet, reduces misuse and ensures consistent, controlled handling throughout every task.

Built for safety, designed for confidence

Modern warehouses demand both speed and precision. In fastmoving logistics environments with constant activity, where operators navigate tight spaces, shifting heavy loads, safety is a critical priority.

ODA, Toyota Material Handling Europe’s operator detection assist system, adds a proactive layer of protection that works continuously in the background. By monitoring the operator’s position and detecting unsafe conditions, the system automatically adjusts truck performance to prevent incidents before they occur. This intelligent intervention supports smoother operations, reduces the risk of collisions and gives operators the confidence to work efficiently without compromising their safety.

The system’s ability to react instantly to changing conditions helps maintain consistent handling, even in challenging environments. Whether manoeuvring in narrow aisles or navigating busy loading areas, operators benefit from a truck that actively supports safer behaviour and reduces the likelihood of operational errors.

How ODA thinks ahead: safety in every movement

At the core of the system is a smart sensor setup that continuously monitors the operator’s position relative to the truck. When the operator steps in front of the vehicle, the system identifies their location within predefined zones and immediately adapts the truck’s speed, acceleration and braking. This rapid response reduces kinetic energy and helps prevent incidents involving the operator’s feet.

ODA operates using three intuitive zones that guide its behaviour. The red zone represents the stop area, where the truck halts immediately to protect the operator. The dark green zone triggers speed reduction, while the light green zone manages acceleration reduction and covers all other areas. Together, these zones create a dynamic safety package that supports operators at every step.

The technology also reacts when the operator moves outside the designated zones. In these situations, the steering angle triggers a soft mode that lowers speed and acceleration, ensuring the truck remains predictable and controlled. All adjustments happen automatically and seamlessly, allowing operators to maintain a high level of productivity while benefiting from enhanced protection.

For longer travel distances, the system activates a dedicated transport mode. This temporarily deactivates certain functions to support extended walking periods without unnecessary interventions. As soon as the truck’s speed changes, all safety zones are reactivated to ensure full protection is restored.

Adaptable to customer needs

Every operation is unique and safety systems must adapt accordingly. ODA can be configured to match specific customer requirements, including adjustments to stop zone length and other operational parameters. This flexibility ensures that businesses can tailor the system to their workflow, environment and safety policies without compromising performance.

“With Operator Detection Assist, we’re raising the bar in terms of what customers can expect from our walkie trucks,” explains Jimmy Henrard, Product Manager Safety Solutions at Toyota Material Handling Europe, “Our goal as a company is to create equipment that actively supports operators, not just responds to them. By continuously monitoring inputs, positioning and truck movement, ODA intelligently adjusts performance to deliver smoother, safer operations in all types of application. This is the direction we’re heading, integrating adaptive technologies that give our customers a clear advantage in safety, ease of use and productivity. It’s part of our commitment to lead the market with solutions that make a difference on the warehouse floor.”

A smarter, safer way forward

With ODA, businesses gain more than a safety feature, they gain a tool to create a secure, efficient and operator friendly workplace. By thinking ahead and responding instantly, ODA helps lower operational costs, reduce risks, prevent misuse and maintain consistent handling across all situations. Toyota Material Handling Europe’s operator detection assist system is a powerful step toward a more confident workforce and safer operations with pedestrian pallet trucks and pallet stackers

ODA will be presented at this year’s LogiMAT, an International Trade Show for Intralogistics Solutions and Process Management, held at Stuttgart’s Trade Fair Centre from March 24 to 26.
