A smart truck is a forklift that is connected thanks to hardware that allows data to be transmitted via standard telecommunication networks. This data can be collected and analysed for multiple purposes. You can connect all trucks within your fleet, collect the data from each truck, and of course get an easy overview of all activity within your business.
Smart trucks are equipped with a telematics device which communicates on-line via standard telecommunication network to a web server and provides customers with vital information on how their trucks perform.
Following the current trend, in only a couple of years from now all forklift trucks will be connected – as well as many other "things" in society. We will also be able to connect other vehicles and machines in our customers' logistics operations. The system will deliver all this information to the users in smarter ways, more efficiently and agile, in real time or exactly when and how you want it.
Connecting, monitoring and analyzing the activity of smart trucks all has the same end goal: to optimise efficiency in your business, reducing your total cost of ownership (TCO) and improving your return on investment (ROI).
All electric warehouse trucks from Toyota Material Handling that are ordered since 1 October 2018 are delivered with integrated telematics. The reason behind installing the telematics hardware as standard during production, is that all data from the moment of production of the forklift can be instantly available, for efficient analysis and comparison of data and behaviour of all trucks. This allows you to have full control over your truck fleet and improve your operations in the areas you wish to, for example in safety or productivity.
The hardware of a Toyota smart truck consists of a DHU2+ data handling unit with transmission device, an antenna, and a shock sensor, as well as a keypad. Integrated telematics refers to the fact that these smart trucks are built with telematics hardware already integrated in the forklift during production. This offers the possibility of the truck being connected, but the telematics software still needs to be activated. Upgrading to I_Site does not require any installation on-site: it is a mobile solution that uses 3G connectivity around the globe, making it user-friendly and cost-efficient.
When connected, the data generated from the smart trucks from Toyota is transmitted directly from the truck to a central database, where the information can be accessed via a web portal or mobile app. This is done via the I_Site application, the fleet management system created by Toyota over ten years ago, with around 70.000 trucks already connected. Within this portal, activity levels of all trucks are recorded, creating data that is ready to be analysed. This data can be accessed and used for fleet management and predictive servicing.
Smart truck users will be provided with access to a fleet list via the I_Site portal, showing details of all smart trucks that Toyota has delivered to that site. The fleet list is extracted from the 'MyFleet' facility, but excluding service and cost reports. It will, however, include hour meter readings for all Toyota smart trucks in the fleet, which allows the customer to monitor utilisation levels. This facility is free of charge. The fleet list also shows additional fleet management information such as service and rental contract data, and fleet numbers.
Even if a customer chooses not to subscribe to full I_Site information immediately, they have the benefit of knowing that activity levels are being recorded, building valuable analytics data for future fleet management and predictive servicing.
We will be working closely with all of our customers, to build solutions that reflect their exact requirements, with a menu of additional information channels becoming available. Our aim is to not just be a market-leading provider of handling solutions and services – we also want to share our knowledge and experience and add value to our customers' business results.
Smart trucks provide you with the right information to make sure you are in total control of your operation, and even allow you to take action from a distance if necessary. Whether you are a one-truck customer or have a big fleet of forklift trucks across multiple sites globally. For a maximum value-added operation with extreme optimisation, and zero waste in energy, time and space as a result.
With a smart truck from Toyota you will be able to improve you productivity, your health and safety and it will also give your forklift longer machine life. Connected trucks help to create a safety culture in your workplace. A smart truck will give you better control and you will, in the end be able to lower your cost.
Improved machine utilisation: Toyota's existing I_Site data, derived from all connected smart trucks already in operation, shows that most companies can eliminate substantial waste in resource by improving utilisation levels. This will probably result in fewer truck requirement levels for many of our customers, as they start to use data to improve truck planning, but we recognise this to be the responsible route to take as resource suppliers and business partners.
Improved driver performance: from the data you can monitor each truck and each driver to asses when extra training is needed or when the license is expiring.
Smart benchmarking to assess and compare truck performance across different sites.
Risk prevention: you can control the speed of your truck, and make sure trucks are temporarily disabled after a collision, to prevent accidents from happening and keep your drivers from being injured.
Shock monitoring: Thanks to the shock sensors you can have an overview of the impacts registered, when and where they happened, and at which speed. You can make sure trucks go into creep speed after an impact, only able to perform at full capacity again after being reset by authorised personnel.
Driver safety: you can have an easy overview of which drivers are authorised to drive which trucks, check the licences and who needs refresher training, making sure your drivers perform certain safety procedures
Be in control: always be aware of what's happening, wherever you are, with the possibility to take action if necessary
Longer machine lifetime: by optimising operational efficiency of the trucks.
Energy efficiency: thanks to the possibility to monitor and optimise battery use, for longer battery lifetime.
Limit operational cost with the possibility to track utilisation and optimise fleet size where necessary.
Avoid damage cost thanks to the safety features.
Lower maintenance cost by monitoring the way equipment is being handled.
Lower insurance cost by preventing accidents.
Since the telematics hardware is built into warehouse trucks from Toyota as standard, these forklifts are available as smart trucks at no extra cost. This means you will have an overview of all trucks in your operations, as well as their operating hours.
If you wish to get the most out of your smart trucks and access all the information the telematics system is able to provide you, then upgrading is an option. With a small monthly subscription you can access the full functionality of I_Site fleet management, without any additional installation of hardware.
When upgrading, an activation charge per truck and subscription rate per truck per month is included.
If you wish to add certain options, you can request a truck with the following below listed functions, which require additional hardware against a small fee.
- Pre-operational check: only allows the truck to start after a complete safety check of the truck has been performed by the driver.
- Smart access: lets an authorised driver start the truck using their existing badge.
- MyFleet package: a summary report with your machines' performance, based on telematics and Toyota internal systems.
Toyota trucks gather and store utilisation data when they are used. All such data is transmitted to and processed by Toyota. Without prejudice to the customer's intellectual property rights and subject to compliance with applicable law, in order to continuously improve our logistics solutions, products, rental and service offerings, Toyota and its affiliates will collect, use, modify and copy any data received under this contract. Data from standard Smart Trucks: GDPR is not applicable
Buying a smart truck from Toyota means buying a connected truck: in other words, a default consent to connectivity and to our collection of smart truck activity data. As a customer, you will have to explicitly opt-out if you do not want your truck to be connected. The data we collect does not include driver details, thus no GDPR Data Processing Agreement (DPA) will be required.
For more specific information about our collection of truck activity data according to local legislative requirements, please contact your local Toyota Material Handling organisation.
Full I_Site information: GDPR
When you upgrade to the I_Site system, which requires Toyota to access and process personal data, it triggers mandatory GDPR actions. At the point of truck order or I_Site upgrade, customers buying full access to I_Site information are required to sign a DPA, otherwise you are not GDPR compliant. This also applies to all existing I_Site users.
Your challenge is to ensure your operations run smoothly and have eyes everywhere. Imagine your operators need to go through a pre-operational check before starting the truck, or that you can be notified as soon as something happens.
